WHAT IS RESEARCH?

Research is a process for discovering new knowledge.  It follows a series of systematic steps, from coming up with an idea (or hypothesis), to testing the hypothesis, analysing the results and drawing a conclusion.

Research in health and medicine may for example aim to understand biological processes, identify markers of disease, develop new care and treatment models, or compare the effectiveness of available options. It may be done for example in the laboratory, with animals, with computer modelling and/or with humans.

WHAT IS A CLINICAL TRIAL?

Clinical trials are one type of research involving human participants. They typically aim to figure out what diagnostic tests, devices, treatments, procedures, physical activities, or other interventions work, how safe they are, and in some cases, how they compare with what is already available.

Clinical trials require ethical approval and in most cases, for volunteers to be informed and consent before they take part.
